The bay tree is a small evergreen with an upright growth habit reaching up to 7.5 – 10 metres in height.
Watered regularly but sparingly it grows well in containers or planted in gardens in a well-drained soil and positioned in sheltered sun or partial shade. Although a hardy multi-branched plant, protection from frost and wind is recommended to prevent damage to the foliage.
The aromatic glossy dark green leaves are often used fresh or dry as flavouring in cooking. Leaves can also be trimmed to shape making an attractive houseplant.
